November Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month
Staff Report / Spartanburglocal.org
November is recognized as National Native American Heritage Month. Efforts to honor the contributions of First Americans to U.S. history began in the early 1900s. The first American Indian Day was celebrated in Lawrence, Kansas in 1915, which included a push for recognizing Native Americans as citizens. New York became the first state to officially recognize American Indian Day in 1916, followed by several other states.
Several states later opted to designate Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it wasn't until 1990 that the month of November was federally recognized. President George H. W. Bush declared it "National American Indian Heritage Month." Since 1994, variations of this proclamation—including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”—have been issued annually.
This month is an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, stories, and cultures of Native American communities, ensuring their histories and contributions are respected and honored for future generations.
