USC Upstate hosted its annual First-Year Reading Program event featuring author and ornithologist J. Drew Lanham. The event took place on campus and focused on the themes of identity and nature.

Lanham, known for his book "The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature," shared insights from his upbringing in rural South Carolina and how his experiences intersect with his identity and relationship with the natural world. He encouraged students to explore their own identities through creativity and storytelling.

"We have the responsibility to speak out as loudly as we can to work towards undermining the crises where we might," Lanham stated during his presentation.

Senior Instructor Tasha Thomas, along with others, contributed to guiding students in critically examining their personal narratives and connections to their surroundings.
